"A book of nature photographs that is a bit out of the ordinary-

The only unifying theme is simply, as the title states, the eye of the photographer, Al Martz, who is by training a geologist and environmental scientist, and by instinct an artist.  The selection of the 100+ well-executed plates arose from his growing up on the mid-continent, a child observing the muted texture of farmlands, to be suddenly immersed in European and African landscapes as a teenager, and later advanced studies leading to the discovery of the grandeur of the American West and other lands.

Some photographs stand alone, including views of iconic landmarks that are given new life by meticulous consideration of color and texture and framing.  Other photographs are paired in unexpected combinations, perhaps a towering monolith next to a close-up of mineral minutia, or a mountain of slickrock and a salt playa, that together make perfect visual sense and produce a delightful synergy.

The text introducing each section of photographs, loosely organized into Desert and Badlands, High Country and Canyons, and Low Country and Wetlands, is restrained yet provocative, leading the reader to make their own observations and probe the delicate and complex worlds revealed in each photograph."-J.R.
